Parrott rifles were distinct with their cast iron barrel with wrought iron reinforcing band. First adopted in May 1861, the Parrott rifle could fire projectiles effectively to 2000 yards.

Greatly valued for its effectiveness and mobility, the "Napoleon" was also able to shoot a variety of ammunition from solid shot to canister shells.
