Developed in the 1850s by Emperor Napoleon of France it made its way into US service in 1857.

At the start of the war only a few were in use, but by the war's end more than 1700 were deployed among the two armies. Highly effective at 1000 yards, the maximum range could be as much as one mile making it the most popular artillery piece in use.
