The Bivouac
Sculpted by Ron Tunison,1999
“My thoughts and heart are with you at home, but my duty lies here with cause and comrades.”
Surrounded by the wagon tracks and hoof prints of an army on the march, two soldiers enjoy a brief rest beside a roadside fence. One crouches over a small campfire, preparing a meal of hardtack, salt pork, and coffee. The other turns his knapsack into a temporary writing desk and pens a letter to a far-off recipient whose image he keeps among the few items he carries. Behind them, a small visitor shares their simple meal.
The life-size bronze monument is at the entryway of The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier at Pamplin Historical Park.
