This is an autobiography by A. H. Newton a Comissary Sergeant of the 29th Connecticut Infantry, a part of of the United States Colored Troops. He was born in 1837 to a free woman and enslaved father. He joined the army in New Haven, CT in December 1863 and was mustered out of service in November 1865. In 1866 he was called to ministry and was a pastor in the African Episcopal Church until his death in 1921.

This copy was reprinted in 2000 by Pamplin Historical Park for use with our Duty Called Me Here exhibit. Paperback 269pp
